Program for Marx Now 2020

We finally have a conference program ready for you. We are able to present many exciting papers this year, and we especially look forward to our two keynotes -> Maia Pal and Brenna Bhandar. Unfortunately we have limited participation capacity due to the corona situation. It is therefore important to remember to sign up for the conference in good time. Marx Now 2020: Deadline extended

Abstracts should still be 200-300 words and be sent to info@marxistiskestudier.com.

Those who have already submitted abstracts before the original deadline of 15 June will receive a word after the new dealine.

All participants need to register here: https://marxistiskestudier.nemtilmeld.dk/

Border and Boundaries

Capital knows no bounds, yet thrives in a world of borders and boundaries; between classes, between individuals, between nation states, between politics, economy and household, between production and reproduction. These divisions define the terrain of capital, as well as the struggles against it.

The nation state, which has been the main frame of reference and struggle for left-wing politics since the First World War, remains exposed to the economic and political pressures of global capital as well as the threat of nationalist recuperation. Right-wing parties have proven uniquely capable of leveraging this national(-ist) framework to reframe the widespread anger with the economic and political system following the 2008 financial crisis, in order to capture power. Meanwhile, novel and increasingly deadly border regimes have been developed in the US, EU and beyond, and new ones are currently proliferating across the globe in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Capital not only traverses and transcends national borders and boundaries but is also driven to transgress the natural limits of life on the planet, while nation state competition hinders any meaningful response to the impending ecological collapse. We are currently entering a new epoch, where capital erodes not only its own foundations but also the preconditions of human survival as such.

The Danish Society for Marxists Studies wants to interrogate and address the significance of these borders and boundaries to contemporary capitalism and anticapitalist struggles. We therefore invite contributions on this and related topics for the fifth annual Marx Now conference. Topics might include (but are not limited to):

  • The relationship between capitalism and the international state system, including war and the construction of border regimes in historical or contemporary perspective.
  • The relationship of nationalism(s) and fascism(s) to capitalism and the nation state system, as well as the recent rise of right-wing nationalism and populism.
  • The origins and significance of the structural division of social life under capitalism into separate spheres, i.e., domestic, economic and political spheres, as well as productive and reproductive labour, their particular dynamics, struggles and interrelations. The limits to capital accumulation and the subsumption of different spheres of social and natural life.
  • The causes of and responses to the unfolding climate crises within global capitalism and the international system.
  • The relationship between limited value production and unlimited asset valorization in the financial sector.

Open Call

The ambition with the annual Marx Now conferences is also to create a common platform for critical and emancipatory research in Denmark. For this reason, as in previous years we are also happy to welcome papers that do not directly touch upon this year’s theme but contribute to these research traditions

Please submit your abstract of 200-300 words to info@marxistiskestudier.com no later than June 15, 2020. Abstracts and presentations may be in Danish or English.

Extension of Deadline

August 1 was the official deadline for abstracts for Marx Now 2019, and we are looking forward to reading the many contributions already received.

However, we have also had several inquiries from vacationing potential contributors and have therefore decided to extent the deadline by two weeks. This means that the new deadline for abstracts is August 15 2019.

Send your abstract of 200-300 words to info@marxistiskestudier.com.

All who have submitted abstracts (including those who submitted before the original deadline) will receive an answer shortly after the extended deadline.

Marx Now! 2019: Power — Conflicts and Contradictions

Forms of power pervades all spheres of life, including the university. Yet where there is power, there is also the possibility of subversion. To explore different concepts of power and subversion, the Danish Society for Marxist Studies would like to invite you to our annual conference, Marx Now! at the Danish School of Education (DPU) in Copenhagen, 4–5 October 2019. The purpose of the conference is in part to strengthen the critical research traditions at universities, to identify gaps and blind spots and to bring together researchers from disparate fields. We invite those inside and outside of the academy to join us in this endeavor and urge potential contributors to translate the broadly formulated theme into their own areas of research.

The overarching theme of the 2019 conference will be Power: Conflicts and Contradictions. Power is contradictory. It suppresses, directs, conducts, registers and standardise. The power of capital relies on and reproduces a wide array of social contradictions and antagonisms relating to class, gender, race, sexuality, body forms, culture, nationality, etc. That domination and exploitation historically have gone hand in hand seems beyond questioning, so instead we will ask how and through which mechanisms the two have been linked. How can we best understand the ways in which capital has produced or reshaped and utilized identity markers as class, race and gender? Continue reading “Call for Papers: Marx Now! 2019”

Marx Nu! 2019: Magt og Modsætning

(For an English version, please see here.)

Continue reading “Call for Papers: Marx Nu! 2019”

Deadline for abstracts

Ny deadline

Continue reading “Deadline for abstracts”

Marx Nu! 2018 Call for Papers (English)

They say that when you repeat something three time in a row it becomes a tradition. It is thus with great pride that the Society for Marxist Studies (SMS) invite you to the establishment of a tradition in Danish academia: the society’s annual conference Marx Now!

Marx Now 2018: Arenas of Struggle

They say that when you repeat something three time in a row it becomes a tradition. It is thus with great pride that the Danish Society for Marxist Studies (SMS) invite you to the establishment of a new tradition in Danish academia: the society’s annual conference, Marx Now!

SMS invites researchers, students, and other interested parties to present research directly related to or otherwise inspired by Marx, Marxism and/or the critical impulse that has issued from this tradition over the past 200 years at Marx Now! 2018.
